All Florida Bike Polo League #2: Open Streets St. Pete
The second All Florida Polo League event is taking place in glorious downtown St. Petersburg and it’s right around the corner. Here’s a quick brief on what to expect.
We’re lucky to be able to coordinate with Open Streets St. Pete, a car free day to play! Open Streets is a large public event that closes the southern end of Bayshore Drive along the waterfront from 1st Avenue S. to the south side of the Dali Museum. Many vendors and food trucks will be set up along that route, near us at Al Lang stadium, and at Albert Whitted Park. Lots of people strolling, biking, skating, etc. Because of the exposure this lends our local club we’ll have info handouts and stickers to distribute. One of our goals is to get interested people on bikes to give polo a try. There will be space next to the temporary court so we don’t need to interrupt games. Help doing these things and being all-around amicable is greatly appreciated.
This unique occasion presents several challenges. We’ll be installing a temporary court the morning of, and disassembling later in the afternoon. Any help people can offer is more than welcome.
Another thing to note is that parking is limited next to the court and is metered. There are also several lots/garages nearby. The court is conveniently next to the end of the Pinellas Trail, a buffered two way bike lane through downtown. The trail can easily connect to some free lots/spots further west. Please plan accordingly.
The format of the day will be identical to our outing in Gainesville. Several rounds of computer shuffled 3v3 games and then a short round of bench games. The bench teams will be split-up evenly from the results of the preceding shuffle games.
Limited housing is available for any that would like to arrive on Saturday. Please message me and I’ll see what we can work out.
